St Stephen's Drama Group

Drama by the community for the community

About us

St Stephen’s Drama Group took its first bow in 1971, founded by four spirited church members keen to bring a touch of theatrical magic to the wider Church community. Our debut? The gripping mystery An Inspector Calls — a bold choice for a fledgling group running very much on a “wing and a prayer”!

Back then, stage lights were just rows of household bulbs, and our lovingly built sets were charmingly simple. What we lacked in tech, we made up for in heart, humour, and a healthy dose of drama. In those early years, everyone pitched in, building sets late into the night, providing our own costumes and buying our own scripts. But we kept going, and the group steadily grew.

Our first panto sparked a new tradition: performing in the last week of January. Since then, we’ve built up a full lighting rig, sound system, special effects, and a fantastic wardrobe (only the odd wig gets hired now!).

Today, we’re a vibrant, inclusive group, welcoming members of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you act, sing, dance, or prefer the magic backstage — there’s a role for everyone.

We also enjoy social events, theatre trips, and supporting other local groups. New members are always welcome — from age 8 to 80 and beyond!

“I’d just been to another local drama group’s panto and this was by far the best. I still can’t believe they wrote it themselves”

“I laughed so much. It hurt. It was really great and the amount of energy those actors had to do the quick change scene near the end was incredible”
